Not cooking. Cooking for someone.
Turn a broad topic into a niche with a real viewer and your own angle. Score up to three options, then get your starting pillars, your first 10 video ideas and a test plan that fits your week.
Start with you
Four quick taps. They shape your starter ideas and your test plan.
Which sounds most like you?
What do you want from it?
Time for videos each week
How do you want to show up?
Write up to three options
Narrow by who and why, not by shrinking the topic: topic → who it’s for → their situation → your angle. You’re picking one to test, not to marry.
Score each one, 1 to 5
Be honest. You want a decent answer to all five, not a perfect answer to one.
How it works
This is the niche quick-pick from Chapter 3 of Worth Watching. Write up to three options, narrowing a broad topic by who it’s for, their situation and your angle. Then score each one from 1 to 5 on five questions:
- Interest: Could you make 50 videos about it and still care?
- Know it: Do you know more than your viewer, or are you happy to learn in public?
- Viewer need: Are real people stuck on it, curious about it or entertained by it?
- Can keep it up: Could you make it for a year with the time, money and gear you have, even on a bad week?
- Room for your angle: Is your take different from the top videos in this corner?
The top score wins, and ties go to whatever matters most for your goal. Then you test it with a batch of videos, not one, and let what your viewers save, share and ask about tell you whether to expand, adjust or change direction.
Common questions
What’s the difference between a topic and a niche?
A topic is the big subject, like candles. A niche is a corner of it with its own people and problems, like candle care for people who buy nice candles. Add the one kind of person you picture and what makes your take different, and you know what to make.
How narrow should my niche be?
Narrow by who it’s for and their situation, not by shrinking the topic until nothing’s left. Then try the 30-idea test: if you can’t list about 15 ideas in 20 minutes, it’s too narrow. If any video about the broad topic would fit, it’s too broad.
What if I pick the wrong niche?
You’re picking one to test, not to marry. Make a batch of about 12 videos, look at what your viewers save, share and ask about, then expand, adjust or change direction. Changing direction doesn’t ruin an account.
Is a crowded niche bad?
No. It proves people want it. It just means your angle matters more.
Is my answer saved anywhere?
Only on your device, in My Studio. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
Chapter 3 covers picking your corner, checking demand, the viewer profile and your first test. Chapter 4 covers your purpose, voice and the one rule that keeps a channel on track.
