Average view duration

Also called AVD, Average watch time

How long, on average, each view lasted.

Why it matters

Next to the video’s length, it shows whether people stayed.

Example

A 40-second video with a 20-second average view duration: on average people watched half.

Common mistake

Comparing AVD between videos of very different lengths without also checking the percentage watched.

How to use it

Average view duration is most useful next to the video’s length and its retention graph. If AVD is low, look for where on the graph people leave: a steep drop in the first seconds points to the hook, a slow slide points to pacing, and a cliff at a certain moment points to something in that moment.
