Jump cut

A cut between two moments of the same shot, so the subject seems to jump forward in time.

Why it matters

It cuts pauses and mistakes and keeps talking videos quick.

Example

Removing every “um” from a talking-head clip, leaving small jumps between sentences.

Common mistake

Leaving dozens of identical jumps in a row, which feels jittery. Mix in punch-ins and B-roll.

How to use it

Jump cuts are a normal part of short video. To make them feel smooth, cut on a breath or the end of a thought, alternate between your normal framing and a slightly tighter punch-in, and cover some cuts with B-roll of what you’re describing. Keep the camera locked in place so the background doesn’t shift between takes.
