Captions

Also called Subtitles, Closed captions, SRT

The spoken words written on screen. Open captions are burned into the picture; closed captions are a separate file viewers can turn on.

Why it matters

Many people watch with the sound off, and captions make videos accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Example

Two short lines at a time, in the middle of the frame, timed to the speech.

Common mistake

Long lines in tiny text at the very bottom, right under the app’s buttons.

How to use it

Keep caption lines short (about one to two lines), timed so they’re on screen long enough to read comfortably, and high-contrast enough to read on any background. Check spelling of names and terms, because auto-captions get them wrong. Uploading an SRT or VTT file where the platform supports it also helps people who rely on captions control how they look.
